Contrary to popular belief, a larger carat diamond is not always more valuable than a smaller stone. The value of a diamond is determined by what jewelers refer to as the “4 C’s”, referring to Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat.

The Color evaluation of most gem quality diamonds is based on the absence of color. A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond has no hue and therefore has a higher value.

The Clarity of a natural diamond is the absence of any inclusions in the stone or blemishes on its surface. As diamonds form deep beneath the earth, the heat and pressure can result in a variety of internal characteristics. Evaluating diamond clarity is a combination of the size, number, and position of these natural marks. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes to perfect, the higher its value.

The Cut of a diamond determines the ability of the stone to transmit light. The more expert the cut, the more the diamond sparkles and scatters white light into all the colors of the rainbow.

The Carat weight is simply how much the diamond weighs on a special diamond scale. Each carat weighs 200 milligrams and each carat can be divided into 100 points. Under one carat weight, a diamond is described by points alone. For example, a stone weighing .40 carat could also be considered as a “forty pointer.”

Taken all together, the 4 C’s contribute to the price of a diamond. Only a trained professional with the right equipment can properly evaluate a diamond. Although diamond shopping on the Internet is very popular, our philosophy at Zalman’s Treasures is that the consumer must have a jeweler that he/she can trust. ? The most reliable certification in the industry comes from the Gemological Institute of America. When a stone is sent to them for certification, whether it is a diamond or a colored gemstone, GIA subjects the stone to intense scrutiny. Under high magnification the stone is “mapped” for shape, inclusions and “feathers” in the internal structure. Every map is unique. No two diamonds are alike, just as no two fingerprints are the same. GIA certification provides proof of authenticity and aids the jeweler in setting the price of the stone.
